Short Story Cocktail Club
My friends and I have devised a plan to start a Short Story Club. We don’t want to do a Book Club because we know ourselves and know that we would never read one. I mean, I’ve read books. Ha ha, of course I’ve read books! Like, um. That one book. The Seven People You Meet On Tuesdays Time Traveler’s Wife. I LOVE that book! But books are long and we want to meet more frequently because we also want to drink cocktails that somehow relate to the story whilst discussing. Basically, it’s just a fancy way of getting together to drink. Obviously, that would be my ultimate motive.
Anyway, on that note, here are four of my favorite short stories. If you’re bored, you might want to read them. Next to them is a recommended cocktail. The stories are in no particular order, but The School and The Lottery are the shortest if you’re REALLY into brevity and should start your own Pamphlet Club wherein you read and discuss pamphlets you’re handed on the street. (Can I be a member?). I doubled up on Saunders because I couldn’t decide which one I liked more. (Nerd).
Read: Jon by George Saunders
Drink: Dark and Stormy
Read: Sea Oak by George Saunders
Drink: Zombie or a Corpse Reviver #2
Read: The School by Donald Barthelme
Drink: Death in the Afternoon (absinthe and champagne)
Read: The Lottery by Shirley Jackson
Drink: Bloody Mary or a Sazerac
P.S. If you haven’t read The Illustrated Man yet, you should. It’s a book of short stories by Ray Bradbury, mostly about people going nuts/dying in future outer space, but, like, future space as imagined from the 1960’s, which is THE BEST kind of space. For that, I would recommend drinking a Moonwalk.
