Walker's Wheelhouse

Blog of writer and comedian Sarah Walker. This is her Wheelhouse.

I went to see Morrissey at The Shrine Theater in LA last night. When I told my sister-in-law I was going she said, “Just imagine how many hipsters will be there,” and I was like, “Totes.” But I FORGOT about Morrissey’s huge Latino fan base, which for obvious reasons would come out in spades in LA. So it was really cool, I’d say 90 percent of the people there were Latino and not hipster at all, like Rockabilly or just girls dressed in tight pants and tight shirts and big earrings, talking about how this was their fifth time seeing Moz that month.

The show was amazing, that man can croon. And I’ve never seen so many people jump on stage and try to hug a performer. They were all thrown off, but some of them got a hug in, and you could tell that he loved it. My only beef with Moz is that “First Of The Gang To Die” is the big LA song, and at one point he said, “He was the first of the gang to die…” and then launched into a song. Everyone’s cameras went up in anticipation and there was a huge cheer, but then he played a completely different song. As people began to realize that, the cameras dropped and it was sort of sad and confusing. Like, kind of a mean joke on his part. “Mean.” Sure. Whatever, it was an awesome show, and I think his backing band is SO COOL. Just fucking owned it. Then I got lost driving home and what should have been a fifteen minute drive turned into an hour. So, however great I felt about LA after the concert, went right back to feeling not at all great about LA, post driving. LA, come on. Sort it out.
